Hit a Homerun...Fourth Grade!

What's round, hard and sold for $3 million dollars?

Mark McGwire became baseball's home run king in 1998 with 70 home runs.  His 70th home run ball sold for slightly more than $3 million dollars in 1999.  Babe Ruth, an earlier home run king, hit 60 in 1927.  His home run ball was donated to the Hall of Fame.  Suppose that Ruth's ball was valued at $3000 in 1927 and, like many good investments, doubled it value every seven years.  Would you rather have the value or Ruth's ball or McGwire's ball?

Tell me, fourth grade...can you hit a home run and solve my challenge?  Show me how you solved this problem and that your class is full of WPE Smarty Pants!

Look out...we have some fourth graders who can hit a homerun in math!

Third Grade on Parade...

Ok, third grade...it's time for your challenge...don't let me down!  Can you show me how many Smarty Pants we have in Third Grade?

It’s time for the annual school fall parade. The third grade decides to march in a special formation this year. One person walks in the first row, two people walk in the second row and three people walk in the third row. This pattern continues on and on.

If the whole third grade marches in 10 full rows, how many students are in the third grade?

Use numbers, words, tables and/or pictures to explain how you know your answer is correct.

Check out some of the ways our third graders solved this problem...

Here's your challenge fourth grade...you're going to really have to do some thinking to solve my problem!

Elena, Joe, Owen, Samantha, and Grant have weighed their backpacks.
  • Elena's backpack weighs the most.
  • Owen's backpack weighs 0.45 lb less than Joe's backpack.
  • Samantha's lunch weighs 1.5 lb. With that lunch out of the backpack, the backpack weighs 16.55 lb.
  • Grant's backpack weighs more than Owen's.
How much does each person's backpack weigh?
